PODCAST

What’s this podcast about?

When feeling scared, we do all types of things to manage the discomfort that comes our way. Who doesn’t feel afraid? Who doesn’t feel anxious?  The reality is that fear-based reactions are easily generalizable to many situations, don’t exist in isolation, and affect all of us to a different degree.

Think about it, when we feel afraid, we do feel afraid not only about one thing, but many; our fears travel together -not along, and at times, we do handle them more effectively that others, but wherever we go, we do experience fear.  That’s why, playing-it-safe actions are the norm and not the exception.

When playing-it-safe, we think over and over about our project, postpone deadlines, procrastinate what we need to do, shoot for perfection, ask others for reassurance, check multiple times what we are doing, or spend hours searching for information, and do many other things to approach a situation with safety crutches.

When playing-it-safe we can also avoid completely a situation, and never faced it.

We all play-it-safe and do what fear pushes us to do many times. It just happens that we haven’t been taught to distinguish when it’s effective to play-it-safe and when it’s a roadblock.

Who doesn’t play-it-safe?

“I sometimes get bored and feel unhappy with my job; I would like to do more freelancing and work on my blog, but then I think that, maybe, it’s just  better do what I know… it’s familiar, and it gives me a solid income.”
“I’m afraid of making mistakes so I spend hours and hours meticulously checking and re-checking my artwork.”
“I make sure I never say the wrong thing, so I try to rehearse in my head what I need to tell people when having a conversation… It’s time consuming and it can be very distracting.”
“I’m afraid of flying so I take the train every time I have to travel even though, it takes me 4-5 days to arrive at my destination.”
“I don’t like to be alone… I think I’m afraid of being alone so I make sure my schedule is always full with “zero downtime.”

The challenge is how often do you play-it-safe, when do you do it, and how it works in your life.

This podcast is about how playing-it-safe actions look like, feel like, and sound like.

How can you overcome our natural tendency to play-it-safe when feeling scared, afraid, anxious, or worried?

We will look together at cutting-edge principles, skills and insights from behavioral science about fear-based reactions, explore all types of playing-it-safe actions, and you will learn how to do what works, what matters, and what you care about.

The upside of playing-it-safe behaviors is that – not matter what type of sticky thoughts we’re dealing with – we learn to step-back, question what we’re doing, try new stuff, find what works, and prepare ourselves to face what comes our way in this uncertain, unpredictable, and imperfect world.

What happens when you make courageous moves to stop ineffective playing-it-safe action and start living?

Meet the host

My name is Patricia E. Zurita Ona, and because I have a long name, my clients call me Dr. Z. I’m a licensed clinical psychologist in California, with an undergraduate and doctoral training specialized in empirically supported treatments. When I say “specialized training” I mean exactly that!

I love working with overachievers and overthinkers to get them back into their life and unstuck from worries, fears, anxieties, obsessions and playing-it-safe actions.

On a personal note, I’m a social introvert. I absolutely love hanging out with people, bounce ideas back and forth, and share a great laugh. And, I also love the quiet moments, the wandering around, pondering on ideas, and dreaming with new projects – like this one.
